Bringing click heat map
Analytics to Emailers

CleverTap marketers could see how many clicks each link got, but not where those links sat in the email. I designed Click Map: the email rendered with clicks on every link, linked two-way to a ranked breakdown. v1 shipped on existing data as a Private Beta. Beta feedback then shaped a v2 that ties clicks to conversions.

Constraints and principles

Principle 01
Map and list, together
Came from
The audit. Tools that paired the render with a ranked list let people move between where and how much. Iteration 1 proved the opposite: hiding one hides the answer.
→ Shows up in the split view
Principle 02
Say what the data cannot do
Came from
Edits reset the map, and older campaigns have no stored HTML. Instead of quietly showing wrong numbers, every limit gets a visible state.
→ Shows up in honest states
Principle 03
Reuse before you build
Came from
Clicks were counted per URL, and v1 reused that pipeline as is. View user details reused the existing Events to People flow.
→ Shows up in the breakdown
Principle 04
Show controls only when needed
Came from
A single variant HTML send should look simple. Metric, AMP and Variant controls appear only when the campaign actually has them.
→ Shows up in the toolbar rules

v1 shipped: split view

The email with a count on every link, colour coded by rank from red to blue and grey for zero, beside a ranked breakdown whose cards repeat the same colour on their edge. Metric, AMP and Variant controls appear only when the campaign needs them. View user details reuses the existing Events to People flow.

01 / 07
“I can't read the actual email text.”
So v2…
One switch between exact badges and a heat view with adjustable strength. The colour legend lives in a sticky footer, and grey is reserved for zero clicks, because the next question was always what yellow means versus red.
Heat + legend

Ordered by dependency, not excitement

NOW, V2.0

UI on existing data

Legend and overlay, names before URLs, compare A/B, export and share.

NEXT, V2.1

New data joins

Conversions lens, device split, bot filter.

LATER

Platform work

HTML per email version, placement level link IDs.

A CSM's campaign review
“Which link worked?”
Same question, two journeys.
5steps, across a CSV, an inbox and a slide deck
1
Export Split of Clicks as a CSV
A list of wrapped URLs and counts.
2
Open the sent email beside it
Two windows, no connection between them.
3
Decode each tracking URL
Every row starts with the same domain.
4
Match every row to a link by hand
Logo and button to one URL? One row. Guess.
5
Screenshot and annotate for the deck
Filters and context get lost on the way.
What we set out to measure
Targets agreed with the PM before launch. Signals, not claimed results.
01
Adoption
Share of sent email campaigns where Click Map is opened within 7 days.
02
Speed to answer
Time for a CSM to say which link performed best, and why, in a review task.
03
Replacement
Fewer Split of Clicks CSV exports per account.
04
Impact, v2
Campaigns where a map insight led to a layout change in the next send.

Reflection

Lesson 01
Ship the honest version first
What happened
Empty, loading and edited campaign states felt like overhead in planning. In beta, being clear about limits did more for trust than any extra feature.
Lesson 02
The data model is a design decision
Next time
URL level counts capped what v1 could say about placement. I would push for link IDs at the tracking layer much earlier.
Lesson 03
Design for the review meeting
In hindsight
Sharing came up again and again in beta. Export belonged closer to v1 than I first argued.
